Inside the Innovation Lab: Turning Ideas into Impact

Innovation is often seen as a function or a team. But in reality, it’s a capability that needs to be built, tested, and continuously developed across an organisation.

At Aventum Group, the Innovation Lab plays a central role in making that happen.

In this conversation, James Fairgrieve, Head of Innovation, shares how the lab is designed not just to generate ideas, but to deeply understand technology, support experimentation, and bring high-impact concepts to life.

Building Understanding Before Building Solutions

One of the core purposes of the Innovation Lab is research and development.

Rather than rushing into building products, the lab focuses on deeply understanding the technologies behind them, particularly in relation to ATOMX, the group’s technology platform.

This means:

  • Exploring new and emerging technologies

  • Testing their capabilities and limitations

  • Learning how they can be applied effectively

By investing time in this process, the team ensures that when solutions are built, they are done in the right way - with a solid foundation rather than assumptions.

A Collaborative Approach to Innovation

A key theme from the conversation is that innovation doesn’t sit in one team.

The Innovation Lab works across the entire organisation, bringing together ideas from different people, departments, and perspectives.

As James highlights, being the innovation team doesn’t mean having all the ideas.

Instead, the lab acts as an enabler - creating the structure and support needed for ideas to emerge from across the business.

The Bear Cave: Unlocking Ideas Across the Business

One of the lab’s flagship initiatives is the Bear Cave, an annual innovation challenge open to everyone across Aventum Group.

The third season has just launched and the concept is simple:

  • Anyone with an idea can apply

  • Ideas must aim for meaningful impact

  • There must be a tangible outcome

From there, ideas are reviewed, shortlisted, and developed further with support from the Innovation Lab team.

This approach does two important things:

  1. It opens up innovation to the entire organisation - making it accessible to everyone

  2. It ensures that ideas are grounded in real business value

Importantly, this isn’t just theoretical.

Some of these ideas are already becoming reality - including solutions now live within ATOMX, as well as new developments such as AI agents inspired by recent submissions.

From Ideas to Real Solutions

What sets the Innovation Lab apart is its focus on execution.

Ideas are not just collected - they are actively supported and developed.

The lab works closely with teams to:

  • Refine concepts

  • Build and test solutions

  • Turn ideas into working products

This hands-on approach ensures that innovation leads to tangible outcomes, rather than staying as concepts on paper.

The Next Frontier: AI and Data

Looking ahead, the focus is clear.

The Innovation Lab is exploring how to combine generative AI with machine learning to position Aventum Group as a market leader in this space.

This is not just about adopting new technology - it’s about integrating it in a way that delivers real value.

A major enabler of this is data.

With ATOMX now live and used across the business, we have access to a level of data we haven’t had before. This opens up new opportunities to:

  • Train smarter systems

  • Generate deeper insights

  • Build more intelligent solutions

As James points out, this represents a significant step forward - one that will take us to another level.

Creating the Conditions for Innovation

The Innovation Lab demonstrates an important principle:

Innovation doesn’t happen by chance. It happens when organisations create the right conditions for it.

At Aventum Group, those conditions include:

  • Dedicated R&D and experimentation

  • Cross-company collaboration

  • Open access to innovation initiatives

  • A focus on real, tangible outcomes

By combining these elements, the lab ensures that innovation is not just an aspiration, but an active, ongoing process.

Final Thoughts

Innovation is often misunderstood as simply having ideas.

In reality, it’s about understanding technology, enabling people, and creating pathways for ideas to become real solutions.

The Innovation Lab shows how this can be done effectively, combining deep technical exploration with organisation-wide collaboration.

And as the focus shifts toward AI, machine learning, and data-driven innovation, its role is only set to become more important.

“Innovation isn’t about having all the ideas - it’s about creating the environment where the best ideas can come from anywhere.”
