Apprenticeships at Every Stage: Breaking the Stereotype

When people think of apprenticeships, they often imagine school leavers at the start of their careers. But that’s far from the full story.

As someone with 30 years of experience in leadership and learning and development, our Group Head of Learning and Development, Jeff Uden, never thought an apprenticeship would be for him - that is until he embarked on one himself. What he discovered changed his approach to leadership entirely.

Why did you decide to start an apprenticeship after decades in leadership?

For years, I have been passionate about creating opportunities for people to shine and to be recognised for their learning and excellence. I always championed apprenticeships, believing in their power for the younger generation. With 30 years in leadership and L&D behind me, I admit I thought what more could I possibly learn? As it turns out, much more than I ever expected.

What impact has your apprenticeship had on you?

It’s been nothing short of transformational. It has reshaped how I interact with my team. My apprenticeship has been a revelation. The knowledge and skills I have gained have allowed me to become the most authentic leader I’ve ever been and the results speak for themselves. Our team is delivering more than ever before.

How has it changed your leadership approach?

It has changed how I see leadership and how I see people. I constantly question my practices and experiment with new approaches. Not every experiment works, but the process of learning, adapting and growing is invaluable. I try to empower my team, too - creating an environment where learning is continuous and innovation is encouraged.

What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?

Forget the stereotypes. Apprenticeships sometimes get a bad reputation. If only people understood the benefits, the boost in confidence and the ripple effect of positive change that apprenticeships have on individuals and those around them, perceptions would shift dramatically.

Apprenticeships are for everyone, regardless of age or experience. This National Apprenticeship Week, I encourage everyone to think about an apprenticeship that could transform your career because you might just surprise yourself.
