Prioritising Mental Health in the Workplace: It’s Time to Act

This World Mental Health Day at Aventum Group, we are taking a moment to reflect on a crucial but often overlooked aspect of our lives - mental health, especially in the workplace. This year, the World Federation for Mental Health has chosen a theme we all need to hear: it’s time to prioritise mental health in the workplace, focusing on the widespread issue of burnout.

But what does that mean for us, as individuals and as a company? More importantly, how can we collectively create a supportive, open environment where mental health is taken as seriously as physical health?

One thing is certain - you never really know who might be struggling. Different people cope in different ways, so it is important to have a range of tools and resources to support everyone.

Recognising the Signs

Mental health struggles don’t always look the same. Some people might withdraw, become irritable or even lash out, while others mask their pain behind a smile. Understanding the ways mental health issues can manifest is key to fostering a supportive working environment.

As part of a series of mental health events in the week leading up to World Mental Health Day, there was a seminar open to all Aventum Group employees on Recognising and Responding to Poor Mental Health, where these signs were explored. The session highlighted some of the most common conditions people face, including anxiety, depression, stress and burnout.

The workshop also emphasised that workplace stress is not like the physical danger our ancestors faced. While it can feel overwhelming, the triggers are not always obvious to others, or even ourselves. Recognising the signs in yourself and your colleagues is the first step to creating a safer, more supportive workplace.

Prioritising Mental Health at Aventum

We understand that mental health matters just as much as physical health. That’s why, in the lead-up to World Mental Health Day, we ran a series of events for our colleagues to help them check in with themselves and those around them. Activities included:

  • Movement Monday: Kickstarting the week, our in-house personal trainer led a session designed to keep bodies moving and minds sharp.

  • Talk Tuesday: We hosted a seminar to help attendees recognise and respond to poor mental health in the workplace.

  • Walk Wednesday: Motivating everyone to step away from their desks, get outside and take a break from their screens.

  • World Mental Health Day: All employees were encouraged to wear green to show their support for the day.

  • Reframe Friday: We finished the week on a positive note, with a remote mediation session to help relax and reframe the mind.

Tools for a Healthier Workplace

Mental health is personal. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. That’s why it’s so important to have a range of tools available to support different needs - whether you are managing anxiety, depression, burnout or looking for ways to maintain a healthy mindset.

For some, staying physically active helps maintain a sense of balance, while others may benefit from mindfulness practices like breathing exercises or cognitive reframing - simple techniques that can help shift perspectives and manage overwhelming thoughts.

At Aventum, we have made mental health resources more accessible than ever, with support services such as Mental Health Navigators on hand and offering weekly activities like massages in the office and personal training.

You Are Not Alone

Mental health is deeply personal and the path to wellbeing looks different for everyone. Whether seeking professional help, trying out new coping mechanisms or simply looking for someone to talk to, it is important to remember that you are not alone.

As we mark World Mental Health Day 2024, let us keep the conversation going. By prioritising mental health in the workplace, we can continue to build an environment where everyone feels supported and valued.
